The project will be implemented by a partner consortium bringing together the European Wergeland Centre (Norway), the Finnish National Agency for Education (Finland), Education development centre (Lithuania) and the National Centre for Education (Latvia). The project is funded in the frames of the NORDPLUS programme (for more information www.nordplusonline.org)
The training-for-trainers will be based on the Council of Europe manual “Teaching Controversial Issues”. The manual provides tools and approaches for educators on how to create inclusive and democratic spaces for all where open and respectful dialogue, critical thinking and respect for differences is promoted. Furthermore, the project will consolidate efforts of and build on existing networks in the Baltic and Nordic regions in this field.
In 2016 and 2017, introduction and piloting of "Teaching Controversial Issues" was conducted in the Baltic countries (2016) as part of the “Baltic Partnerships for Human Rights Education and Education for Democratic Citizenship” project; and the Nordic countries (2017) as part of the Norwegian Chairmanship programme for the Nordic Council of Ministers. As a result the manual was translated to the relevant languages, and there is a strong support for continued dissemination and training based on the manuals and the positive experience of the piloting. Besides strengthening the capacity on national and regional levels in dealing with controversial issueswhen working with young people in formal and non-formal education, the project activities will also support the professional activities of partner organisations.
The training for trainers implemented in the frames of the project will be open to participants from all Baltic and Nordic Countries. The training will be followed up by implementation of local activities by the trainers in their respective countries. In the summer of 2019 all participants and partners will have the opportunity to share their experience and suggest directions for further development during the 1 day Evaluation Forum.
